The Environmental Studies program at Seattle University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor to begin September 2020.  We seek a broadly trained social scientist in the social-behavioral dimensions of sustainability, with expertise in environmental economics. The Environmental Studies program at SU combines coursework in the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities to prepare undergraduate students with the problem-solving skills to contribute to a society that is ecologically sustainable and socially just ( The successful candidate will be housed in the Environmental Studies program with the potential to explore affiliations with related departments.

Responsibilities will include teaching, maintaining an active high-quality program of scholarship, and performing university, college and departmental service.  Teaching expertise should include some combination of the following areas: environmental economics; equity and environmental justice; behavioral change and decision-making; environmental communication; advocacy; environmental psychology; human-environment relations. The successful candidate is expected to teach a set of required Environmental Studies courses, with the potential to cross-list courses with related departments outside of Environmental Studies, develop courses for the University Core, and teach an elective in an area of interest.

Research areas of interest include but are not limited to: urbanization and sustainable communities; environmental justice; behavioral change and environmental decision-making; environmental communication, education and/or advocacy; adaptation and resilience of coupled human-environmental systems.  Applied research pertaining to questions of sustainability and environmental management is preferred.

Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D. in a social science field with a focus on the social-behavioral dimensions of sustainability.  Possible fields include but are not limited to environmental management; planning; public policy; psychology; economics; interdisciplinary fields in the social sciences. The candidate should demonstrate expertise in a social science area and the ability to work with scholars and/or practitioners from across disciplines. Evidence of an active research agenda, teaching effectiveness, and commitment to diversity and inclusion, including inclusive pedagogical practices in classroom teaching, advising, and mentoring is required.
