ANNOUNCEMENT OF FACULTY VACANCY
SUSTAINABLE URBAN SYSTEMS
The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) in Syracuse, NY, invites applications for an academic year tenure-track position as Assistant Professor in Environmental Studies with an emphasis on Sustainable Urban Systems.
The successful candidate will be expected to build a strong, extramurally funded research program in sustainable urban systems. S/he will teach undergraduate and graduate course(s) in Sustainable Urban Systems, Environmental Sustainability and seminars within his/her area of expertise. The typical teaching load is two courses per semester. The selected candidate will be expected to collaborate with colleagues and students in other disciplines at the College and engage the broader academic community. We seek a new faculty colleague with robust analytical skills (e.g. in systems analysis, spatial analysis/ geographical information systems, and/or quantitative modeling) and strong academic training and experience in a field of study related to Sustainable Urban Systems. Topical research areas are open, but we are especially interested in candidates with a research focus on one or more emerging areas of importance in the domain of sustainable urban systems, such as: sustainable transitions, sustainable urban infrastructure, sustainable community development, public engagement/ participatory planning, urban ecology, sustainable urban food systems, coastal urban communities, among others. The faculty member hired for this position will be expected to contribute to ESF’s Minor in Urban Environmental Science, and the college’s Center for the Urban Environment. The ideal candidate would be an advanced Assistant Professor with an established track record of sponsored research, scholarly engagement and publication, and excellence in teaching. Experience in interdisciplinary collaboration, research, and teaching at a specialized, PhD-granting STEM institution is highly desirable. While not required, experience engaging with urban issues in US ‘rust belt’ cities is a plus. We are particularly interested in candidates with a commitment to diversity and inclusiveness.
- A Ph.D. in Urban Studies and Planning, Environmental Studies, Human Geography, Sociology, Sustainability Science, or a related discipline.
- A record of excellence in research and teaching.
- Strong theoretical grounding in one or more disciplines.
- Interdisciplinary research experience.
- Post-doctoral or equivalent experience.
- Experience mentoring graduate and undergraduate students.
- A quantitative scholar with experience using mixed methods, (i.e., survey design, network analysis, synthesis, SEM, Bayesian modeling).

Founded in 1911, the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) is the nation’s oldest and most respected school dedicated to the study of the environment, developing renewable technologies and building a sustainable future. The ESF main campus is in Syracuse, NY and has regional campuses throughout Central New York and the Adirondack Park. The Environmental Studies program integrates the social and biophysical sciences and the humanities to enhance environmental policy, the communication of environmental perspectives, and decision-making processes. The Department offers Bachelor of Science (B.S.), Master of Science (M.S.), and Master of Professional Studies (M.P.S.) in Environmental Studies. Ph.D. degrees supervised by departmental faculty are offered through ESF’s Interdepartmental Graduate Program in Environmental Science.
