The Environmental Studies Program at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) invites nominations and applications for the Dehlsen Endowed Chair in Environmental Studies, for appointment at the associate or full professor level. Candidates should be distinguished scholars whose expertise is on the human-environment interface from local to global, with an emphasis on solutions. Research foci in the areas of environmental economics and policy, environmental communication, environmental justice, environmental movements, the built environment, energy and climate, and food and agriculture are particularly welcome. Candidates must have a reputation for excellence in innovative scholarly research, teaching, and service.

UCSB’s Environmental Studies Program was founded in the aftermath of the Santa Barbara Oil spill in 1969 and has maintained a position of leadership since that time, graduating over 5,200 students. Our undergraduate program is among the top programs in the country, and operates within a campus that contains a range of outstanding related environmental departments and programs. We seek candidates who will contribute to the Program’s position of leadership on the UCSB campus, within the US and internationally. Our Program has a long-standing commitment to integrative research and teaching, and to interdisciplinary balance with strong representation from the biophysical sciences, social sciences, and humanities. We are particularly interested in faculty who value collaboration with colleagues in other fields.

The appointment is anticipated to be at 75% in the Environmental Studies Program, with the expectation for a joint appointment at 25% in another UCSB department. Candidates are expected to maintain an active graduate research and teaching program through their affiliated department. The Chair brings with it a stipend to be used at the discretion of the Chair-holder in furthering the Chair’s program of research, teaching and service.

Applicants should submit a letter of application, current vita, and names and complete contact information for three references (including e-mail addresses and phone numbers). Finalists should be prepared to submit evidence of teaching experience. Submissions should be sent to: David Cleveland, Chair, Faculty Recruitment Committee via email address: ESFacSearch@es.ucsb.edu. For primary consideration, applications should be received by October 31, 2012. Campus visits are planned for Winter 2013.

The Program is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, and service. UCSB is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
