MORGAN STATE UNIVERSITY
PATUXENT ENVIRONMENTAL & AQUATIC RESEARCH LABORATORY
Post-Doctoral Position – Resource Economist
DESCRIPTION: Morgan State University Patuxent Environmental & Aquatic Research Laboratory (PEARL) is seeking a Post-Doctoral Fellow to conduct a regional economic assessment study of the impacts of developing offshore wind turbines on the recreational
fishing industry in Ocean City, Maryland. The general approach to this study is to develop average angler expenditure and industry costs profiles for each of the various modes of recreational fishing in Ocean City, Maryland. These expenditure and costs profiles will then be used in IMPLAN®, to generate county level estimates of the economic impact. Changes to the economic model will be driven by estimated changes in fishery abundance of targeted recreational fish species. These changes will be estimated with the help of fishery experts. The position will require occasional trips to Ocean City, Maryland. As well as interviews as well as meetings with industry personnel.
In addition to conducting the wind energy study, the position will also be responsible for helping to develop a fishery focused economics research program at the PEARL. Successful development of the research program could lead to a full-time staff position.
The candidate must have Ph.D. in resource economics (an emphasis in fishery analysis is preferred). Experience in conducting regional input/output assessments or economic impact assessments is desired. Familiarity with oyster fisheries as well as the IMPLAN®
impact analysis model is encouraged. Capacity for independent work and ability to interact productively with colleagues are important. Strong oral and written communication skills are required. Duties include literature review, field interviews, computer analysis, report and proposal preparation, and oral presentations.
