The University of Tromsø has a vacant position as post doctoral research fellow in Environmental or Development Economics.

The position is for a fixed term of 2 years within the interdisciplinary project TUNDRA– Drivers of change in circumpolar tundra ecosystems, which is financed by The Research Council of Norway.

Qualifications required: A doctoral degree is a prerequisite for appointment in the position of post doctoral research fellow. The applicant should have a Norwegian or equivalent foreign doctoral degree within Economics, preferably in Environmental or Developmental Economics.

If several applicants qualify for the position, the candidates will be prioritized according to previous experiences with interdisciplinary work in the interface economic development and environmental change. Good skills in econometrics are also preferable.

Working conditions: The successful applicants will work with socioeconomic data from Russia, Norway, Canada and Alaska to analyze the relationship between economic development and environmental pressure in circumpolar tundra regions, as described in the project description 2.3.1. Data collection and analyzes will be conducted as teamwork in Workgroup 2 (W2) of the TUNDRA project, which include Saint Petersburg State University, University of Tromsø and Cornell University (See www.tundra.uit.no or contact Vera.Hausner@uit.no for further information)

The successful applicant must be willing to engage himself/herself in the ongoing development of his/her discipline and the university as a whole. The working time will be set aside for research, research-related activities and research administration.

Appointment for more than one fixed term period at the same institution is not permitted. Regulations concerning redundancy pay cannot be included in the fixed-term work contract.

Remuneration: The remuneration for the position of post doctoral research fellow is in accordance with the State wage scale code 1352.

A compulsory contribution of 2% will be made to the State Pension Fund.

Plan for the period of research fellowship: The main objective of appointments to positions of post doctoral research fellows is to qualify the appointee for employment in scientific top positions.

Applications must be accompanied by a proposal for the qualifying work and shall include a work schedule. Appointments are made on the understanding that the appointee shall complete his/her project within the contract term.

A plan shall be drawn up showing how the project that forms the basis for the appointment in the position of post doctoral research fellow shall be implemented. The plan shall form part of (an appendix to) the employment contract for the fixed term and shall cover the project description and work schedule. The plan shall also state the amount of potential teaching or equivalent work for The University of Tromsø required. The plan shall also state who is responsible for providing academic supervision. The person responsible for providing academic supervision and the employee both have a duty to report to the employer in case of inadequate implementation of the plan.

Department of Arctic and Marine Biology (AMB) comprises several research groups located in several buildings at the University campus. Research and teaching activities cover a wide range of biological areas – from molecular cell biology through the environmental adaptations and ecophysiology of individuals to ecological studies of terrestrial and aquatic habitats. AMB hosts the ARCTOS network and PhD school. A main focus is on studies of boreal and Arctic organisms, with activities covering both basic and applied research, including the management of biological resources of ecosystems within the High North. Projects are normally carried out in close collaboration with national and international research colleagues, and there is also considerable co-operation with regional research institutions (The Polar Environmental Centre, Institute of Marine Research, Norwegian Institute for Agricultural and Environmental Research and Nofima). Faculty academic staffcurrently constitue 41, administrative staff 4, technicalstaff 27. In addition the Department hosts 70 post-doctoral researchers, doctoral students and grant-funded research technicians.      

Faculty of Biosciences, Fishery and Economics (BFE) consists of Department of Arctic and Marine Biology, Norwegian College of Fishery Science (NFH) and Tromsø University Business School (HHT). Evaluation: The applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. The main emphasis will be placed on assessment of the submitted scientific work as well as the relevance of competence, experience and suitability in relation to the required qualifications and work obligations. Applicants may also be invited for an interview.
