Post-doctoral Research Opportunity

At least two new post-doctoral positions are to open up, starting August 2012, at Northeastern University to expand capabilities in analysis and modeling of urban sustainability challenges. Specific topics for research may include, but will not be limited to urban resilience; urban adaptation to global change; urban material and energy use; and urban climate, public health and environmental justice.

Qualified applicants must have completed by August 2012 a PhD in geography, urban studies, civil and environmental engineering, ecological economics, industrial ecology or a related field, and possess strong analytical skills and relevant modeling experiences (e.g. dynamic modeling, econometrics, GIS) as demonstrated by prior coursework, dissertation, and publication record. Solid understanding of one or more of the following is highly desirable: complex system dynamics; climate change economics and policy; regional science; and urban systems analysis.

    I am Sachin Jadhao, pursuing PhD in Department of Chemical Engineering at Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), Mumbai, India (Formerly UDCT & UICT, Mumbai) under guidance of Prof. Bhavik Bakshi & Prof. Aniruddha B. Pandit on the topic “Thermodynamic Assessment of Resource Utilization and Destruction in India in Past Four Decades: Insights from Exergy Analysis”.I am about to submit my thesis.This work is an attempt to understand the metabolism of India over the last four decades as it evolved from a controlled to a more open free market economy, and its implications for sustainable development. In present work we compare and analyze India’s growth on the basis of, resource consumption, economic progress and environmental pollution. Thermodynamic system analysis approaches was used to compare the progress of India in past four decades with the other developing and developed economies. This work also focuses changes in resource conversion with change in technology, industrialization and economic liberalization. Exergy efficiency (Second law efficiency) of conversion of resource for varies application in the society (e.g. electricity generation, Industrial production, transportation, transformation, agriculture & residential sectors etc.) have been estimated. Maximum resource intensive areas as well as the areas which are responsible for largest resource destruction due to irreversibility’s/losses have been identified and based on the current level of scientific understanding the possible improvement opportunities in Indian context have been proposed. I have also estimated the environmental emission on process as well as life cycle scale, associated with resource use for all sorts of end use applications in the Indian society mentioned above.

    This work also includes, the thermodynamic assessment of various Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) treatment options in India. In this study various conversion options for MSW in India have been examined using second law of thermodynamics (exergy analysis) and economic analysis. Exergy associated with the streams across the major unit operations of the plant are estimated and illustrated. Exergy loss taking place in each process section have been estimated and recommendations have been made for proper adaptation. An attempt has been made to understand, how exergy analysis along with economic analysis can help to make choices among the available options for devising sustainable MSW management strategy for a developing societies like India.

    During my PhD tenure, I have developed basic understanding of Industrial ecology, Thermodynamic System Analysis, Application of exergy analysis for the assessment of resource use and environmental emission in the society.

    I want to apply for postdoctoral position for Environment Economist /specialist. I have worked in the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) for 8 years. I am expecting to finish a PhD degree in Environmental Economics. I have M Sc. degree in Economic policy and B. Sc. degree in Statistics.
    I have extensive research work experience at ILRI in policies for sustainable land management project in the horn of African region. Past researches mainly focus on agricultural production and land degradation. We have also published a work on returns to soil conservation adoption in Agricultural economist Journal. I have also worked on impact assessment of Soil Conservation on Crop Production in the Northern Ethiopian Highlands.
    Recently, I have studied the relationship between environment and Livestock production for my PhD work in Ireland. The study focuses on biodiversity, livestock productivity and environmental using production frontier model.
