The Department of Economics & Management (http://www.helsinki.fi/economics-management/) at the Faculty of Agriculture & Forestry, University of Helsinki, invites applications for a three-year
POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER POSITION, focusing on “sustainable agri-food value chains and food networks for regional economic development“.
To join this project and contribute to our understanding of the marginalization of rural areas in Europe, you are expected to come with a strong quantitative background. Your interest, as reflected in some of your PhD work, relates to how agri-food value chains and networks can contribute toward resilience in rural space. You have a strong interest in organizational design issues around agri-food value chains, or a strong interest in regional economic development with a focus on social capital and the diversification of rural economic activities. You are thus expected to be able to connect to issues of sustainability in space methodologically and conceptually (e.g. in terms of micro-perspectives of sustainable value chains in terms of triple bottom line, entrepreneurship in rural communities/ regional economic growth, social network theory/ analysis, resource-based view of the firm, social capital and value creation, microeconometrics). In short, you are expected to be confident and flexible to work in a multi-disciplinary research environment at the Department of Economics & Management, under the direction of the Professorship of Food Economics (Prof. B. Steiner). You will be provided with the necessary support to publish your past/ ongoing PhD output and focus on a future career path around the economics and management of argi-food value chains.
In practice, you will be working at Viikki campus (www.helsinki.fi/en/viikki-campus) of the University of Helsinki, but you are expected to actively interact and also visit collaborators in other institutes/universities. You are expected to present new findings in scientific meetings and workshops, as well as act as a leading co-author of publications for international scientific journals.
Motivated persons with a suitable PhD degree (or a PhD degree that is in the process of being concluded during Fall 2017) are encouraged to apply. English will be the working language of the project.

- a letter (max. 1 page) with a description of how your research interests relate to the above call, and why you would be the best candidate for the project.
The salary will be based on level 5 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance with the overall salary amounting to approximately 3 000-3 500 €/month (gross). All standard pension benefits and occupational health care are provided for university employees. The work is scheduled to start by Fall 2017, with some flexibility as a function of your graduation status. There is a four-month trial period for the position.
