Scientific Engineering Associate (Energy Efficiency Standards)

Berkeley Lab’s Energy Analysis and Environment Impacts (EAEI, https://eaei.lbl.gov/) Division has an opening for a Scientific Engineer Associate to join the Energy Efficiency Standards (EES, https://ees.lbl.gov/) Group. In this role, you will take a leading role in the design, implementation, and utilization of analytical tools for data collection, analysis, and modeling in support of the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Appliance Standards program.
The Energy Efficiency Standards Group supports the U.S. Department of Energy’s Appliance Standards Program by performing the analyses that underlie the development and amendment of energy conservation standards and test procedure rulemakings. Your role will be to develop advanced analytical and modeling tools, and provide other high-level technical support while applying engineering and scientific concepts to the development of energy efficiency standards and test procedures.
What You Will Do:
- Create and develop tools to improve the engineering, economic and environmental analyses of appliance standards policies.
- Develop and support the development of numerical models to support the engineering and economic aspects of the development of energy efficiency standards for residential appliances, commercial/industrial equipment, and/or lighting products. The models purpose is to assess patterns and distributions of energy use, consumer life-cycle cost, forecasting of product shipments, and estimation of aggregate national impacts of standards.
- Develop tools to manage large databases.
- Provide technical support to the research team on troubleshooting the tools and models.
- Develop database quality control tools and procedures.
- Work with limited supervision on the development of models and tools, and perform quantitative and qualitative synthesis of findings.
- Contribute to the creation of written documentation to describe the tools and models, and, as needed, present to technical and non-technical audiences.
What is Required:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Physics, Statistics, Engineering, or related field and a minimum of 2 years of extensive professional technical experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience with development of computational tools in Python and/or Excel/VBA.
- Expertise in developing analytical tools, and numerical modeling.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written English communication skills, including demonstrated ability to present engineering and economic models and tools to a non-specialist audience with strong attention to detail.
- Ability to function well in meeting tight deadlines adapt to rapidly changing work demands.
- Ability to collaborate effectively on teams sharing creative/innovative thinking.
- Interest in energy analysis and policy (described in cover letter).
Additional Desired Qualifications:
- Advanced graduate degree in Physics, Statistics, Engineering, or related field.
- Professional experience applying concepts related to energy efficiency in appliances or buildings in an analytical context.
- Familiarity with the US federal regulatory process, especially as it relates to energy efficiency.
- Experience applying engineering and economics concepts in the context of energy efficiency (e.g., life-cycle cost, net present value of efficiency improvements).
- Familiarity with basic principles of relational databases and SQL.
- Familiarity with appliance engineering models and economic models of consumer choice and cost-benefit analysis.
