Meeting for the Establishment of the Mesoamerican Network of Ecological Economics

Organized by the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences FLACSO-Guatemala from 26 may 2008 – 27 June 2008 in Guatemala city.

MESOAMERICAN CHAPTER OF THE ISEE TO BE CREATED IN GUATEMALA

The Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences FLACSO and the International Center for Economic Policy of the National University of Costa Rica (CINPE-UNA) with the support of other regional organizations are promoting the development of a Meeting for the Creation of the Mesoamerican Network of Ecological Economics, to be held at FLACSO, Guatemala, on May 26, 27, 2008.

The main objective of this activity is to promote the reflection on the perspectives of the ecological economic approach and its potential contribution for the analysis of regional problems aorund socio-ecological conflicts and sustainability. During this meeting, the first General Meeting of this ISEE chapter will take place, seeking the
approval of its bylaws, the establishment of a Board of Directors and the approval of a work plan for the following year. More information can be requested from motoya@una.ac.cr or imonterroso@flacso.edu.gt

The First Mesoamerican Certificate Course on Ecological Economics is organized by the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences FLACSO-Guatemala from 26 may 2008 – 27 June 2008 in Guatemala city.

This course seeks to integrate new methods and theoretical approaches for the analysis of complex environmental issues at the Latin American level. It introduces participants to the conceptual frameworks related to ecological economics which can be used to analyze socio-environmental conflicts.  It provides practical tools and instruments to develop more equitable policy decisions. It will be taught by some of the most reknown Ecological Economists working in Latin America today. It is co-sponsored by the ISEE.

Participants from evironmental and development NGOs, government representatives, masters and PhD students as well as academic researchers are invited to apply.

As a Preamble to the Mesoamerican Certificate Course on Ecological Economics, FLACSO, the National University of Costa Rica and other regional organizations organize a conference to assess the state of Ecological Economics in Mesoamerica. This conference will culminate with the creation of the mesoamerican Chapter of the ISEE.

This preliminary conference, co-sponsored by ISEE, will have the participation of several important Ecological Economist of the region, who between May 26-27 will reflect on the state of Ecological Economics in the region and how does a Mesoamerican chapter fit within the development of our transdiscipline. A Distance Certificate Course on Ecological Economics, organized by GEPAMA (Landscape Ecology and Environment Group) from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina and Ecoportal.net is taking place between March-July 2008 with participation of students from 15 countries of Latin America, North America and Europe.

The course has generated great interest and has over 30 participants. It develops thoroughly the most important aspects of our transdiscipline with a critical analysis approach providing ample opportunity for dialogue and debate between the facilitators and students. A new course will begin in August, 2008.

The School of Architecture, Design and Urbanism of the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina hosts a Graduate Program in Ecological Economics: “PROECO”, Ecological Economics, Economy, Environment, Territory and Society. August-December, 2008.
