Juan Pablo Castañeda
Juan Pablo Castañeda is a resourceful professional on the development field, with over 20 years of experience in project design, appraisal, implementation, and management, having worked in different regions including Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, East Asia and the Pacific, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and South Asia. For almost ten years, he has participated World Bank projects, usually with a leading role in providing technical assistance to countries and developing analytical work related to environmental and ecological economics, including knowledge management, with a special focus on mainstreaming natural capital and the measurement of ecosystem services in policy dialogue and planning. As part of the group of economists in the World Bank Environment, Natural Resources and Blue Economy Global Practice (ENB) and in his role as part of the Secretariat of two Multi Donor Trust Funds (i.e. Wealth Accounting and the Valuation of Ecosystem Services Partnership -WAVES- and the Global Program on Sustainability -GPS), he has focused his work on broad sustainability issues -including socioeconomic issues, climate change and resilience-, working with country and global partners in most regions of the world.
Juan Pablo is recognized by peers as one of the first environmental accountants in the Latin American region and one of the few experts in the World, with continuous leadership since the beginning of this century when he first published the first paper on the topic in his birthplace Guatemala. Major strengths include having worked with and led multidisciplinary and multicultural teams both in urban and rural contexts, as well as in the public and private spheres. Recognized for having facilitated projects and research, while forming good relationships with different stakeholders ranging from government officials, local leaders, indigenous people, development practitioners, academics, and technical experts amongst others. In his carrier, he has worked as consultant and researcher, working, and collaborating with Public Institutions, International Organizations, Universities, Research Institutes and NGOs. Fluent in English and Spanish, Juan Pablo holds an MSc in Ecological Economics from the University of Edinburgh in UK. With Graduate studies in Economics and a BSc in Architecture and planning he also has work experience in urban planning, sustainable cities and green infrastructure, and environmental impact assessment.
