Computational Modeling of Extreme Events in Coupled Natural and Human Systems Postdoc


Vermont EPSCoR is recruiting a postdoctoral associate to join our cutting-edge NSF funded research on Basin Resilience to Extreme Events (BREE). BREE is a five-year award of large-scale interdisciplinary studies which will determine how the Lake Champlain Basin’s landscape, watershed and lake conditions respond to extreme weather events and will test policy scenarios for enhancing resilience using our comprehensive Integrated Assessment Model (IAM). As a member of the BREE team, you will participate in unique learning and professional development experiences including learning to communicate your science through our program with the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science.

Computational Modeling of Extreme Events in Coupled Natural and Human Systems Postdoc

A post-doctoral scientist position is available at the University of Vermont as part of a research study on Resilience to Extreme Events in Social Ecological Systems of the Lake Champlain Basin. We seek a scientist and scholar interested in pursuing cutting edge research in the areas of computational modeling of social ecological systems, in particular computational modeling of extreme events in the coupled natural and human systems. Candidates should enjoy being part of an interdisciplinary team of researchers (i.e., faculty, graduate students, undergraduates, and stake holders) working toward identifying strategies that improve water quality resilience within the Basin.

Qualifications: Ph.D. in environmental engineering, watershed science, policy or related field with research interests in Scientific Computing, Social Ecological Systems, Machine Learning, Cognitive Sciences, or Management/Policy Sciences, applied to inter-disciplinary research that employs social and natural science and engineering.

A major goal of Vermont EPSCoR is workforce development, which means that the graduate students and postdocs will be intensively mentored for success. Individuals selected will be expected to interact substantially across the project. Start date June 16, 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter. Position is funded through May 31, 2021.
