Transformational innovations in the meat industry:
social, environmental and economic impacts and opportunities for livestock farmers
The project aims to develop tailored business models for the sustainability of livestock farming systems by examining the role of transformational technological innovations such as cultivated meat. Cultivated meat is being promoted as a more sustainable and safe way to produce meat products by experts in the food industry. However, the cultivated meat industry is still in its early stages and opportunities exist for it to become an extension of existing livestock farms as opposed to being in direct competition with the existing meat industry.
There is, though, a general lack of scientific literature about the impacts and benefits of the cultivated meat industry to livestock farmers, the wider meat industry, consumers’ and planetary health. This PhD project will examine the role of cultivated meat, as a transformational innovation in the meat industry, in enhancing social, economic and environmental sustainability for small-scale livestock farms through a comparative study between USA and Europe. It will also develop sustainable and inclusive business models for livestock-based food systems that includes traditional livestock approaches and new innovations and will benefit all stakeholders within the meat industry, with an emphasis on the livestock farmers.
