A well-grounded understanding of economic interconnections and approaches is central to advancing sustainable development. Along with developing and analyzing various sustainability concepts, questions concerning stakeholder behavior have become ever more important for a sustainable economy based on the principles of ecological economics.

This area offers promising approaches for substantive transformative sustainability research. For this reason, Leuphana University of Lüneburg seeks to appoint the following professorial position (W3) at the earliest possible date:

Sustainability Economics (m/f)

We invite applications from candidates with distinguished research portfolios and teaching experience in the field of “sustainable economics”. Applicants should be working on concepts of sustainability, the analysis of phenomena outside sustainable development, as well as regulatory and other economic and social political approaches to these phenomena. Candidates should possess skills related to specific analytical approaches and solutions, as well as experience with sustainable transformations in concrete fields of application such as, for example, energy, biodiversity, climate, mobility, consumption, organization, trade in international context or modern approaches to a post-growth economy. One area of concentration could also include behavioral sustainability economics.

In accordance with § 25 (1) of the Lower Saxony University Act (Niedersächsisches Hochschulgesetzt, i.e. relevant state law), formal requirements for appointment are:

  • A completed university degree in economics or sustainability studies.
  • Particular ability to engage in intensive, independent academic research in the field of environmental and sustainable economics, as demonstrated as a rule by an above average quality of the candidate’s dissertation.
  • Additional academic accomplishments, produced as a rule in the context of a junior professorship, a habilitation, or equivalent accomplishments, as well as a pedagogical-didactic aptitude as demonstrated through experience using innovative teaching methods.

Additionally, the following requirements are expected:

  • The ability to work in a team and have good network skills.
  • Academic publications of exceptional quality in internationally recognized journals, as well as substantial experience in securing and implementing research projects supported by high-ranking funding institutions.
  • If German is not the applicant’s native language, very good English language skills are required, as well as the willingness to acquire adequate German language skills within a reasonable timeframe.
  • Well-established contacts in academic circles. Ideally applicants would have a contact network within sustainability organizations.

The successful candidate (m/f) is expected to actively support both the overall objective of Leuphana University of Lüneburg (as determined, for example, in the university’s development plan) as well as the sustainable development of the Lüneburg region.

Furthermore, applicants should demonstrate excellent research accomplishments, should be recognized in the scientific community, have an interest in inter- and transdisciplinary research, and represent the educational ideals of Leuphana University of Lüneburg through their high intellectual standards and enthusiastic personality.

The professorial position will be filled in accordance with pay grade W3 (university professor). For first time appointments, the position will be limited initially to five years. For applicants who already have a university appointment at the W2 or W3 level, a lifetime appointment is possible. This applies in individual cases to first-time appointments as well.
