Lecturer (Ecological/Ecosystem Economics)

We are looking to hire a new, enterprising social scientist with a ‘flair’ for Ecological Economics to support our Sustainable Ecosystems team within SRUC’s Department for Rural Economy, Environment & Society. The Sustainable Ecosystems team conducts applied research on the socio-economic impacts of agricultural systems and environmental change.

Teaching

In collaboration with the University of Edinburgh, we coordinate and deliver the taught MSc Programme in Ecological Economics. This is the longest running programme of its kind in the world. The successful candidate will support teaching activities primarily at post-graduate level within the department, and especially the Ecological Economics programme. Accordingly, the successful candidate must be knowledgeable about, and be willing to engage with, Ecological Economics as a discipline.

The successful candidate will also be expected to help maintain, deliver, and further develop an Ecological Economics curriculum that emphases the core, underpinning competencies identified by AdvanceHE as being relevant in Education for Sustainable Development (i.e. systems-thinking, anticipatory competency, critical thinking, strategic thinking, collaboration, integrated problem-solving, self-awareness, and normative competency). This will mean engaging (in a supported way) with innovative pedagogy in concept, practice, and through continuing professional development.

Research

With respect to research, we look for candidates who can make significant social science contributions to the work of the Sustainable Ecosystems team. The Sustainable Ecosystems team contains a unique mixture of Agricultural and Environmental Economists, Ecological Economists, Climate Change researchers, Rural Sustainability researchers, Ecologists and Geographical Information System specialists. Our work is concerned with the impacts of land use change and of change within socio-ecological  systems. We focus on economic appraisals of agricultural and environmental policies, the valuation of ecosystem services, and the investigation complex ecological relationships in marine, forest and agro-ecosystems. As a team, we cover a wide range of national and global issues. These include:

  • Identifying ways to mitigate and adapt to climate change
  • Halting the decline of biodiversity
  • Developing strategies to safeguard marine systems, including marine ecosystem service provision
  • Sustainable management of water resources
  • Understanding the attitudes and perceptions of related to these issues among rural and urban communities.

In its work, the Sustainable Ecosystems team partners with a range of disciplines and follows a pragmatic ethos to deliver high quality research to a range of policy and private industry clients. We are therefore open to applicants using macro- or micro perspectives, and quantitative (incl. modelling) or qualitative methodological approaches to addressing policy and industry challenges. Applicants must show the willingness and capacity to apply and develop research methods to the highest standard.

Other

  • Previous working experience in governmental, non-governmental organisations, and industry is appealing.
  • Bilingual or multilingual candidates are encouraged as they help us offer the best experience to our diverse range of international graduate and postgraduate students.
