Lecturer (Economical/Ecosystem Economics) – Edinburgh

Type: Permanent / full time

Salary: £34,029 – £40,531 per annum (dependent on experience)

Location: SRUC King’s Buildings, Edinburgh

REF: ACF/REES/078/21

Closing date: 8 April 2022

We are looking for an Ecological Economist to support our Sustainable Ecosystems team within SRUC’s Department for Rural Economy, Environment & Society. Applicants need not have a formal degree in Ecological Economics, but must have a thorough understanding of, an interest in, and a willingness to contribute to the field. Applicants must also have the demonstrable ability to teach Ecological Economics to a high level.

Research

The Sustainable Ecosystems team conducts applied research on the socio-economic impacts of agricultural systems and wider environmental change. The Sustainable Ecosystems team consists of interdisciplinary staff who work with partners across a range of disciplines and follows a pragmatic ethos to deliver high quality research to a range of policy and private industry clients. We are therefore open to applicants who have a wide variety of topic area and methodological specialisms and who can complement the expertise already in the team.

The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop an independent portfolio of research according to their interests, but will also be expected to contribute to on-going, Scotland-based research within the Sustainable Ecosystems team. In the first instance, that research will relate to the following themes: just transitions for rural Scottish communities, progressing the circular economy in Scotland, and understanding nature-economy discourses.

Teaching

In collaboration with the University of Edinburgh, we lead and deliver the taught MSc Programme in Ecological Economics, which is the longest running programme of its kind worldwide. The successful candidate will be supported both to learn the teaching methods currently employed in the programme, and to develop new areas of teaching according to their interests, expertise, and capabilities. The successful applicant will also support the delivery of the programme in other ways (e.g. through in MSc dissertation supervision). Continuing professional development related to teaching and education will be encouraged. There may be opportunities to undertake teaching activities more widely at SRUC.

Additional

Previous working experience in industry, governmental and non-governmental organisations is welcome. Bi- or multilingual candidates (Mandarin, Spanish, French, German) help us offer the best experience to our diverse range of international graduate and postgraduate students.

Remuneration

The job grade (3 or 4) and accompanying salary will be commensurate with experience (grade 4: £34,029 – £39,460 per annum and grade 3: £36,777 – £40,129 per annum).
