Conference Overview
XIII INSEE Biennial Conference on Ecological Restoration for a Resilient Society: Economics, Policies and Institutions is going to be held at the Indian Institute of Technology Mandi during 12 to 14 January 2026.
India, the seventh largest country in the world has only 2.4 percent of the world’s land to support nearly 20 percent of the world’s population and 12% of the world’s livestock. With ~98 million hectares of its scarce land resources under different stages of degradation, ~18 percent of the country’s population are exposed to land degradation, and this proportion is increasing over time. Its deteriorating ecological health is challenging India’s development aspirations and its prospects of equitable and sustainable development.
The conference hopes to bring together scholars to deliberate open questions around ecological restoration and contribute towards equitable and sustainable restoration efforts in the country.

The second Jayanta Bandyopadhyay Endowment Lecture and panel discussion on Water Resources and Restoration.
Paper presentation around topics related to restoration of forest ecosystem, urban landscape, agriculture, wetland; the role of policies and institutions; gender aspects.
Video presentations based on real-life examples of ecological restoration.
Panel discussion on ecological restoration in the South Asian region and resource efficiency and ecological restoration interplay.
Plenary sessions discussing economics and finance of ecological restoration and regenerative agriculture.
